The man speaks out / Friday, September 02, 2005

Hi, just letting you know over in blighty that Pete and I were interviewed by Chris Vallance of BBC Radio 5 for the podcasters and blogs hour (around 2am y'alls time I think) about the hurricane effects over here. I hate to listen to myself but if any of you family members want to hear shy Peter on the radio, you may listen online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/programmes/upallnight.shtml, it will probably air Monday, click on "Listen to the latest blog and podcast hour" and there you go. Not quite like my dream of working for the BBC but hey it's close enough for now. I think I sounded like a pushy wife, though. In other news they are repairing the house damage today, not that it will be finished right now, but they removed the tree and are just trying to reframe the roof and attic so that they can cover it to keep rainwater out while they repair the rest of it and assess the real damage in the walls, etc. The area to the immediate south of us is so devastated that I feel horrible even thinking that we suffered one bit. Our homeless population just multiplied and I think outnumbers our residential population (people with homes) as we have most of the evacuees here. This is a very long shot, but if any of you would like to come over and volunteer, we have beds and floor space, but will be without a kitchen for a while. There may be a hole in our house but we at least have one. And this area desperately needs volunteers to take care of the pets, people, supplies and whatever else you can think of. If you'd like to donate money, I have a paypal account, and I will take whatever is donated to that and write a check to one of the area churches who are immediately taking their donations, buying items and delivering them to the shelters. Red Cross is great, but they're taking too long, and this way you'll be able to see (well, hear from us at least) your good efforts. If you want to read more about what is going on down here, you're welcome to read my blog as well, I've been trying to update daily and will soon put up a hurricane journal that I put together when we were going through the storm as the power went out. I just need to type it up. That is at http://prozacbrat.blogspot.com. Also there are more pictures of what the storm did to our house there. We miss you all, take care and thank you for keeping in touch. Little Toby is doing well, and seems to be especially active (kicking me) when his daddy is nearby playing guitar. Speaking of, Peter will be playing guitar in a benefit concert at our church to raise money Sunday night. I'll try to see if I can maybe record some of it and put it up here. We'll see. Ash
