In Which I Play Catch Up / Saturday, December 09, 2006
Ok, so it's been a while. I've been busy! Quit nagging!
Where to start? Let's start with the bit that was most fun...
Toby made it into single digits last weekend. He had a cool party, lots of cake was eaten by all. He has far too many toys now though (In my opinion he had too many before his birthday!) so we're going to wrap some of them up and give them to him at Christmas. There's some photos on Toby's blog (along with a link to more photos and videos). I highly recommend you read his blog, it's far more entertaining than this one!
Mother and Aunty Marian came over to help Toby celebrate, I think that they took a shine to him. It was good to see the old girls, not that I've missed them much or anything...
It's starting to get a bit chilly here, and that along with the build up to Christmas makes me feel homesick. I know it's not always chilly over there but it's the only kind of weather that is similar, because you don't get the same unreal humidity in the summer over there.
I've got a job. I think I told you that. Oh no I didn't! I haven't written anything since October! That's not very good of me is it? Anyhow, I've got a job. I'm a merchendiser for Caburys/Schweppes. It basically means I drive round town, going into shops and putting Seven Up on the shelf. Everyone who has worked with me says I'm very good at it. My boss thinks I'm great (that may be because we both like good music though) and my boss' boss thinks I'm great - that's just because I am... In fact murmors of promoting me are going around, and I've only had two real days of work! (the rest have been training) so that's all pretty cool.
Gosh lots has happened since the end of October! I went to see The Mountain Goats
http://themountaingoats.net/ at The Spanish Moon on Halloween, they were very good. It was kind of disturbing though, The singer was dressed up as Batman, singing songs about being abused as a child and standing on stage smiling away having the time of his life. They didn't start playing until 11 o'clock, which may be alright for students but to us old men who have to work the next morning that's not so great! There was some good local bands supporting them, but I've forgotten their names. It was pretty cool, there was only about 200 people there (150 of whom were talking all the way through. What's the point in paying $15 to go to a bar and talk all night over the top of a band when they can go down the road and do it for free? Tsk!). I'm thinking that living somewhere where most people don't know any music outside country and classic rock may have one advantage, no-one goes to the good concerts here so I can go to some properly intimate shows.
I missed my November gig, that was going to be Ok Go!
http://www.okgo.net/ and Death Cab For Cutie
http://www.deathcabforcutie.com/ but they sold out (oooh the memory of how annoyed I was that I missed them has just come back!) I'm going to see The Black Keys
http://www.theblackkeys.com/ on Tuesday night, and next month I'm going to see Alejandro Escovedo
http://www.alejandroescovedo.com/ My boss want's to come with me, in fact he's buying me my ticket for a birthday present. Maria from church is coming too.
Ash is doing good, she tried to do an evening job at Gymboree but that's too much (she doesn't get home until 11 and she's usually in bed by 9 on days when she's not working) so she's quitting. Not before we took advantage of her staff discount though!
Oh yeah, I forgot to say, there's a great thing about my job, we can get better health insurance for half the money we're paying right now wth Ash's job. So when I heard about that it was basically getting a $200 pay rise. A pay rise and an upcoming promotion in the first month of work! That's not bad!
Oh, if y'all want to listen to some music to get you into the Christmas spirit go here:
